Painting Exercise: No Preliminary Drawing

Today I did something that for me is pretty daring: I began painting a figure without sketching it onto the canvas first.

Actually I did sketch it, just differently than I usually do. Instead of using a pencil and doing a line drawing on the canvas, I began roughing in the figure using paint. No outlines, just masses. I’ve tried this approach a few times over the years but I just wasn’t good enough to pull it off in the past. Today it worked better than it ever has before. That’s exciting!

This is one of the things I love about painting: There are always new challenges and new things to learn!
