Photo Shoot with Thai Boy Christian

Photo Shoot with Christian

Christian is my newest model. I met him at Hula’s where he has been dancing lately. He came to my studio a few days ago for an interview. I talked to him and I like him. He has good energy. Then I did some test shots of him with my digital camera and after looking at those I decided yes, he would be good. So we scheduled a photo shoot for Friday August 22 at Kei and Dick’s house.

Christian is Thai-American, and he grew up in the U.S. Midwest. He’s just turned 21—though he looks a lot younger—and he’s in Hawaii going to college. Despite his youth he’s responsible and serious. Maybe a little too serious. Except when he’s in front of the camera! When he starts performing he becomes a real cut-up and very entertaining. Which is great for my purposes, of course.

Christian showed up on time for our appointment on Friday and he wanted to drive, so I said fine, and off we went to Hawaii Kai to Kei and Dick’s house. When we got there we immediately went to the backyard and started shooting by the pool.

Christian is easy to work with because he’s got a lot of energy and loves to show off. That makes him fun to photograph, because I don’t have to direct so much and he comes up with poses on his own, which is good, but it’s also kind of hard sometimes to get him to just BE there. That didn’t really happen ’til near the end of the shoot.

I shot 17 rolls of film in a little over 2 hours, with Christian running, jumping, taking clothes off, putting clothes on, jumping into the pool, climbing out of the pool, swimming around naked in the pool, standing, lying, sitting, kneeling, etc. You get the idea.

About 10 rolls into the shoot, Christian relaxed a bit and I started to get some shots where he was actually showing more of himself and not mugging for the camera so much.

I should be getting the slides back early this coming week and I’ll be able to start doing some drawings and paintings of Christian. I’m looking forward to it. It’s been a while since I’ve had a new model and a long while since I’ve had such a cute Asian boy to draw.
