Sketches have always played an important role in Simonson’s work. They are a place for direct observation, experimentation, and the exploration of poses, forms, and compositions without the more extended process of a finished painting. Some become starting points for later works; others remain complete statements in their own right.

Created across many years of regular studio practice, these drawings reveal a more immediate side of Simonson’s approach to the figure. Line, gesture, light, anatomy, and attitude are worked out directly on paper, often with an openness and spontaneity that distinguish the sketches from the artist’s more fully developed paintings. Taken together, they form an important parallel body of work—closely connected to the paintings, but with a character and energy of their own.
This gallery presents a changing selection of sketches drawn from throughout Simonson’s body of work. The pieces are chosen somewhat informally, bringing together works from different periods, subjects, and approaches rather than forming a single themed presentation.
The selection will change from time to time, often without notice, as works are added, removed, or replaced. Visitors are encouraged to check back regularly to see what is currently on view.
