Simonson Archives 1979

In 1979 we’re at the very beginning of my dawning self-awareness as an artist of the male nude. I was still very tentative about it, and was mostly working from photos I found in then-popular gay magazines like Mandate, Honcho, Blueboy, etc., although I did use myself as a model sometimes! I copied the bodies but invented my own faces to put on them. I was a bit obsessed with local Hawaiian boys at the time, most of whom were part-Asian, so I was using photos I found in magazines, and sometimes photos of myself, to create my own local-boy fantasy men with Asian-Polynesian features.

Here’s one of the selfies I took way back when I had no models and needed nude male bodies to draw from.

These are the kind of gay skin mags I used back in 1979 as a source of images to draw from. In those days they showed almost exclusively white guys.
