Project 2271: Sombrero 2

This version of my Studio Journal in-progress reports is for Premium Content subscribers. This page gets the updates first, and includes materials not available in the Public and Members-Only versions (like timelapse videos). As a paid subscriber, you also have the option of putting your name on a list of those who will be notified first, and have first options to purchase, when a Project becomes a finished work of art.

ABOUT THE “MAKE A COMMENT” BUTTON: That button is there for everybody! Don’t feel you have to be an art expert or somehow “qualified” to make a comment. I want to hear from you, and if you’re a fan of my art, you’re qualified to make a comment. Thanks in advance for clicking that comment button and checking in with me. I appreciate it!

The updates below are in reverse chronological order, so the most recent is on top. To start from the beginning, go to the bottom of the page.

Project 2271: Fifth and Final Painting Session

December 15, 2025

With the background done, I focused on the sombrero and the head for this final painting session. Pay close attention because these final touches are subtle, but they make a big difference!

Project 2271: Fourth Painting Session

December 10, 2025

In this fourth painting session, I spent almost the whole time working on the background. Getting those out-of-focus palms with the sun coming through them was a real challenge, but I like what I got.

Project #2271: Second Painting Session

December 3, 2025

In this session I started adding color to both the background and the face and figure. At this stage everything is still pretty rough, but getting the main color areas laid in is vital before starting to refine things.

1. Project 2271: New Painting: Sombrero 2

December 5, 2025

My first sombrero painting went so well I decided it would be a practice piece for a larger painting with a similar theme. I used another artistly-produced image as the source. After transferring the image to canvas with pencil, I covered it with an acrylic wash. Tomorrow I’ll start adding some actual color.
